WhatsApp tips and tricks you should know

WhatsApp is one of the popular messaging apps acquired by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014, since then has been adding new features on a regular basis. As of January 2018, WhatsApp was hitting 1.5 billion monthly users who are sending 60 billion messages per day.

While most of us consider WhatsApp like a basic and simple instant message application, it has a number of interesting and sophisticated features. Here are some WhatsApp tips and tricks that you should know about:

1. Pin an important chat

Typing names of important people in the search bar or scrolling down to access your chat history can take a long time and be monotonous every time you want to chat. WhatsApp allows you to set three-contact chats at the top. Swipe a chat to the right and tap the pin icon to get to the top (iOS) or hold a chat and tap the pin button once selected (Android).

2. Read the messages without notifying the sender

You can prevent the blue mark from appearing in the messages you have read. Put your phone in airplane mode and open WhatsApp to read the messages. Close the application after reading it and remove it from its multiple window. Turn off airplane mode and the chat will appear unread for the sender.

3. Mark chats as unread

Mark a chat with a dot if you read a message but cannot reply immediately. This will serve as a reminder for later. On iOS, swipe the chat to the right and touch the unread icon, while on Android, press and hold the conversation you want to mark as unread.

4. Turn off last seen

WhatsApp allows you to see the last uptime of your contacts in the application and vice versa. You can protect your privacy and not let people know when you last reviewed your WhatsApp messages by disabling that option. Go to settings, select account and tap privacy to choose a suitable option for you under the last seen.

5. Read and send messages without touching the phone

Virtual assistants such as Siri and Google Assistant help you read messages without writing or touching your phone. All you need to do is give them a verbal order and they will do the rest.

6. Prevent media from downloading automatically

We sometimes not always wish that the forwarded images and videos to be saved in your gallery automatically, which decreases the space on your phone and can reduce processing speeds without forgeting increasing data consuption. To stop media auto download, Touch the settings, then chat and turn-off “Save to camera roll” on iOS or “Show multimedia content in gallery” on Android.

You can also change preferences in downloading media for individual chats. Open a specific chat and touch the name of the contact or group at the top. Open the “Save to camera roll” (iOS) or “Media visibility” (Android) option and choose from the settings that are right for you.

7. Add doodles and emoticons to your pictures

WhatsApp allows you to play with your images by adding doodles, text and emoticons. Touch the attach option and then go to the gallery, select the image to be shared and it will open in a photo editor. You can make it interesting by adding scribbles or emoticons.

8. Delete accidentally sent messages

Messages that are sent accidentally can also be deleted from the inbox of the receiver. Select the message and touch the “Delete for everyone” option.

9. Change preference of the text language

You don’t need to chat in English in the application, which offers the option of several other languages. Go to settings and select chats, then tap the app language and choose the one you want.

10. Change font

This feature allows you to format the text and convert the simple font to italic or bold. Start and end the text with an asterisk to make it bold; similarly, start and end with an underscore to appear in italics. A check at the beginning and end will cause a strikethrough to appear in the text.

11. Find out who you talk to the most

You may have a long list of friends with whom you chat regularly, but there will be one with whom you talk more. You can find out which contact uses maximum storage. Open Settings and go to Data usage and storage. Tap Storage usage and then select the contact. You can see how much storage each contact has used.

12. Change wallpaper

The wallpaper can be customized by going to Wallpaper in Chats in Settings. You can choose an image from the wallpaper library, the phone gallery or select a solid color.

13. Bookmark messages

There might be something important in a chat that you would want to bookmark. WhatsApp allows you to do that by starring these messages. Open the specific message in a chat, hold down the message and then press star.

14. Broadcast a message to multiple contacts privately

A public message can be sent privately with the help of Broadcast list on WhatsApp. A message sent out to a list of contacts will be received as individual messages by them. Tap on Broadcast on the left corner of your screen (iOS) or the menu icon (three vertical dots) at the top right corner (Android) and add contacts for sending messages.

15. Add dates to your calendar

In iOS, press and hold a date mentioned in a chat to create an event. This will automatically add the event in your calendar directly from your message.
