Objectives of the programme.

This program is designed to further qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of good governance and prepare them in a practice-oriented course for their professional lives. The knowledge and experience acquired in Germany should enable the scholarship holders to later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions.With this Master’s Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance, DAAD intends to support the good governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.

Brief description

The DAAD Helmut-Schmidt-Program Master’s Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance Program offers the best graduates from developing countries the opportunity to obtain a Master’s Degree in disciplines that are of particular relevance to social, political and economic development of their home country at German institutions of higher education.

  • Deadline: Interested student are required to apply before July 31 2020 (annual)

Target group

The programme is open for very well qualified graduates from from Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa; Latin America; Asia and the Pacific, Western, Central, South-Eastern Europe; Eastern Europe, Central Asia & South Caucasus; and the Middle East and North Africa, with a first university degree and interested to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries or regions. This scholarship is offered for both mid- career professionals and young graduates without any professional experience.

Eligibility:

The main DAAD criteria for selection are:

  • Academic degree with far above average results (upper third)
  • language skills (every university has different language proficiency requirements)
  • political and social engagement
  • a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany
  • expected benefit when returning to the home country or region

The last university degree should have been obtained during the six years prior to the scholarship application. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application.

All Master courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants at any case.
