The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is a public university in Alice, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was a key institution of higher education for black Africans, offered a Western-style academic education to students from across sub-Saharan Africa, creating a black African elite.

Fort Hare University opened its doors more than a century ago, on February 8, 1916. It was the key institution of higher education in the country for black South Africans, but it was also welcome students of all races and genders.on February 22 1916,Classes started at University of Fort Hare, with only 20 students. Today, Fort Hare has grown into a multi-campus tertiary institution with a student body of over 12,000.
